Australia’s Todd Murphy is expected to test sternly in the third Ashes test at Headingley, Leeds, where he is likely to replace the injured Nathan Lyon. The veteran was ruled out for the remainder of the series due to a torn calf muscle.
Murphy has only played four Tests in India so far, but he has shown glimpses of quality and understands the enormity of the task ahead. Baseball’s English flair has seen them advance at Lyon and Murphy can’t expect anything different when he falls to the hosts.
Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, here’s what Todd Murphy had to say about the potential opportunity to play in the Headingley Test:
“I think they’re probably going to have a harder time. Obviously, I haven’t played much Test cricket, there’s a challenge that presents itself. They’ve just kept moving forward with the game and I think it’s more about trying to navigate through so come up with some different ideas that can help And you try to keep creating chances.”
Murphy also expects the crowd to be hostile towards Australians and ready to “embrace” the challenge. he added:
“From speaking to the boys this is perhaps the most hostile part of England. It will be different and I am sure they will not back down, so embrace it and try to have a good time… Everyone under no illusions will come very hard.”

Todd Murphy thinks he’s got a lot of confidence after his performance in the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He thinks he’s good enough to do the job for his team against England too.
In this he said:
“Looking back in India, having the opportunity to play Test cricket and being exposed to high-level competitions just helps, and I think I gained a lot of confidence from that experience. I’m confident that if the opportunity arises, I believe in myself that I can be good enough at that level.” .
Todd Murphy also opened up about the advice he received from Nathan Lyon at the end of the Second Test. he added:
“I had a really good chat with Nath (Leon), I think it was the fourth or fifth day of the last exam, and he said just trust what you have, believe in it, don’t get carried away with it. Don’t expect yourself to do too much. My body feels really good at the moment. I’m confident that the work I’ve done post-India to rectify that, I hope, will hold up.”
Filling Nathan Lyon’s senior shoes certainly won’t be easy, but Murphy has a chance to showcase his skills and help Australia win their first Test series in England since 2001.
