Police said the woman’s body, identified as Sadhana Sarkar, was buried by her son Ashish Sarkar “to fulfill her last wish to be buried at home after death”.

In a midnight operation, the Tripura Police removed the body of a 90-year-old woman from under a room in her home in AD Nagar on the outskirts of Agartala. Police said the woman’s body, identified as Sadhana Sarkar, was buried by her son Ashish Sarkar “to fulfill her last wish to be buried at home after death”.

Neighbors expressed their suspicions to the police when the woman had been missing for the day. A woman in the area said, “When we asked Ashish, he said his mother had gone to his aunt’s house.”

We were suspicious of his account because one of our neighbors saw him digging inside the house. Ashish confessed to him that he buried his mother inside the house because this was her last wish.

Another neighbor said: He was mentally disturbed. The whole family suffers from psychological problems.” The neighbor added, “Ashish’s two older brothers died and he was living with his mother, who was suffering from several diseases. I have never seen a visitor in their home.”

Accused Ashish told the police, “My mother passed away late Monday evening. Before her death she asked me to keep her body in this house. So I buried her body here. She had diabetes but did not take her medication except for pressure pills.”

The body was sent for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.

“We can only know the time and cause of her death after obtaining the autopsy report. We have brought her son Ashish to the police station for questioning,” said Asish Dasgupta, Umtali sub-district police officer.
