A man, whose wife is an independent candidate in the July 8 elections in a panchayat in West Bengal, was found dead in the state’s Birbhum district Thursday, hours after he went missing.

The body of Dilip Mahara was found by locals on Thursday morning next to a pond in Sirinda village of the district.

His wife, Chitter Mahara, alleged that her husband was a BJP worker and was murdered by the Trinamool Congress, a charge the ruling party denies.

Chhetri said: “He left the house at 4.30pm on Wednesday and I spoke to him on the phone at 8pm. Since then, no one has seen him.”

Utpal Mahara, the son of the deceased, said, “I haven’t been able to find my father since 9 pm. He was killed by the men of Kali Banerjee (Trinamool Board Member of Birbhum Joint District). Let him be arrested. I want punishment for them. Let the case be investigated.”

According to a police officer, Dilip was killed using a blunt weapon and the real cause of his death needs to be ascertained.

Shetter was supposed to file her nomination papers as a BJP candidate, but the party said it did not give her the ticket.

Responding to the allegation against him, Banerjee said, “Trinamol does not have a homicide policy. Let them investigate his death. Our workers are not involved.”

Trinamool district deputy chief Malai Mukhopadhyay said, “The BJP is doing politics for profit. Let the police investigate the murder.”

As many as 17 people have been killed since the election was announced on 8 June with the opposition party pointing the finger at Trinamool. On its part, the Trinamool party called the allegations unfounded and its leaders indicated that the majority of the dead belonged to their party.

The one-phase West Bengal panchayat elections will be held on Saturday and the counting of votes will take place on July 11.
