The AIIMS Officers Association has extended its support to scientists protesting the administration’s proposal to limit the number of years one can work on projects at the main medical institute. All protesting scientists are either working on research projects or pursuing a PhD at AIIMS.
Proposed guidelines issued by AIIMS management limited the number of projects a researcher can undertake up to three, leading to the immediate termination of about 1,400 staff, including researchers and technical staff working on various projects at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
The AIIMS Officers Association is a group of employees involved in the administrative work of the institute.
The Officers Association stated in a letter to Director Dr M Srinivas that they stand against the dismissal of the CRS staff at short notice.
“With reference to the letter received by the Young Scientists Association in the context of proposed revisions regarding the project staff recruitment guidelines, we support them in their position against dismissal of contract research project staff at short notice,” the letter read.
The letter also added that staff had given their tireless efforts and significant life years to research into AIMS and that new guidance proposing a three-year cap for a project employee with no clause specifying its possible implementation left them in shock. .
She also urged AIIMS management to reconsider the guidelines, suggested canceling the search department’s current memorandum to hold the appointment until then and suggested that the new guidelines should be implemented in the future (for new employees only).
“We, the Officers’ Association, request you on humane grounds to reconsider the guidelines until then we propose to cancel the current memorandum of the research department for the recruitment procedure, and the new guidelines must be implemented prospectively, that is, to be implemented for new employees only, and tooth relaxation should be given to all Employed research staff. Meanwhile, contract research project staff are even allowed to draft new guidelines and the fear experienced by staff must be dealt with with compassion. It looks forward to a holistic, humane approach,” the association said in its request for support for the research team.
