Top seed Carlos Alcaraz continues his campaign at Wimbledon against France’s Alexandre Muller as a place in the third round.
The 20-year-old world No. 1 opened his quest for another Grand Slam singles title against another Frenchman – the retired Jeremy Chardy. Alcaraz meant business from the get-go, hitting blocks and pocketing the goal without giving up a game.
It was more of the same story in the second, as Chardy won two games but was powerless to stop the Spaniard from pushing two sets to the better. In the competitive third set, Chardy – who played his last singles match – emerged in a 4–2 victory. However, Alcaraz regrouped – taking five of the next six matches to improve to 41-4 in 2023 and 5-2 at Wimbledon.
Meanwhile, 84th-ranked Müller beat compatriot Arthur Rindercknik in the all-French opener. Müller started brightly – taking the first set – before Rinderknech leveled the game by conceding just one match in the second set.
Despite this, Mueller reaffirmed his rise in the competition, taking the next two sets to improve to 8-5 on the season to claim his first win at Wimbledon, after falling in the playoffs the previous two years.
The 26-year-old reached the final in Marrakesh earlier this season and also reached the quarter-finals in Doha but faces a tough task against world number one Alcaraz.
