Grant Williams found a new team after ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski confirmed that the forward had signed with the Dallas Mavericks. Williams and the Mavs agreed to a four-year, $53 million signing and trade deal that would send the Boston Celtics to Dallas, playing alongside Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic.

Williams was a restricted free agent. The 6-foot-6 forward had an important role in Boston, being assigned to guard the opposing team’s MVP. In addition, he is a decent shooter from outside the arc and has proven to be a good offensive weapon at times.

Williams did not have a great season statistically. He averaged 8.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists last season.

However, even with these numbers, he proved to be a valuable member of the Celtics. Marcus Smart helped give the Celtics a great perimeter defense. He also turned things around for Boston on the offensive end by being a consistent shooter from deep, making 39.5% of his attempts from 3-point range.

The Celtics are looking for a change as they head into the 2023-24 season with a slightly new-look roster. During the offseason, they replaced Marcus Smart, who has been the heart and soul of the team since he was drafted in 2014. Aside from the leadership qualities he brings, his defense has been a huge part of how Boston manages to be a consistent contender.

One was not enough as they also traded away Grant Williams. Both players played important roles on the defensive side, helping the Celtics stars focus more on making the offense work. With this move, there are some who have speculated that the Celtics are looking to sign another superstar.

It is still uncertain which player Boston is targeting, but this player could be the missing piece in their journey to win it all. Another option might be for the front office to surround the star duo with decent players with their new cap space.
