Over the past few days, Stephen A. Smith a lot about what’s happening at ESPN. News recently broke that the network has dropped nearly 20 on-air personalities. Many of them were longtime employees like Jalen Rose and Jeff Van Gundy.

After offering his condolences to those who lost their jobs, Stephen Smith took the word for his critics. In a video posted to his social media account, he gave a response to those who said he should be part of the layoffs as well:

“I speak directly to people in the industry who said why didn’t Stephen A. go away?

“We’ve got a few people at ESPN who earn more than me, don’t have the premiere, don’t have the highest ratings. They don’t make more money, so how do you bring their name higher?”

Smith brought in the salary because, in the original New York Post report, saving money on the bottom line was one of the main reasons for the layoffs. Most of those let go had salaries in the millions.

Stephen A. Smith could still be a part of the ESPN hairdos

While it seems unlikely, Stephen A. Smith is not yet clear. When discussing layoffs on his podcast last week, he indicated that there could still be more to come. Smith even went so far as to say he could be let go.

“Let’s get real, this isn’t the end, more to come. And yes ladies and gentlemen, I could be next.”

While in theory it could be part of the layoffs, it’s doubtful ESPN would make such a drastic move. As stated by Smith himself, it is part of the top show and gets some of the best ratings.

When it comes to TV personalities in the world of sports, Smith sits at the top of the list. Whether it’s to agree or disagree with him, people tune in daily to hear what he has to say. Because of its lively personality, “First Take” is one of ESPN’s best shows.

Even with a large salary, Grid would be foolish to let him think that someone could easily step up and take his place.
