External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday reaffirmed India’s commitment to representing the needs and priorities of the developing world on the global stage, especially Africa, during its G20 presidency.
This came during a reception aboard the Indian Navy ship Trishul, which is visiting Tanzania. Jaishankar is in Zanzibar on a two-day official visit during which he will visit the country’s top leadership.
Speaking at a deck reception hosted by INS Trishul, he said, “India currently chairs the G20 and as G20 Chair and as G20 Chair, our endeavor has been to make this major forum focus on the needs of the developing world and especially the needs and priorities of the African continent.”
Minister Jaishankar recalled how earlier this year India convened the Voice of the Global South summit to highlight the needs of the developing world.

He also expressed India’s position that permanent participation in the African Union should be considered by G20 members. “We look forward to the response of other members in this regard,” the minister said.
Jaishankar, who is on a four-day visit to the East African country, delivered the speech a few hours after arriving in Zanzibar.

Jaishankar will visit Zanzibar from 5th to 6th July, where he will visit a water supply project funded by the Government of India Line of Credit and invite senior leadership.

Jaishankar also attended the signing of an agreement to establish the Zanzibar campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madras, and emphasized that it reflects India’s commitment to the global south.
After attending the reception at INS Trishul, the External Affairs Minister will visit Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 7 to 8 July, where he will co-chair the 10th India-Tanzania Joint Commission meeting with his counterpart and invite the country’s top leadership.
During the visit, he will meet members of the India Parliamentary Friendship Group and open an India-Tanzania business meeting.
The press release stated that he will also inaugurate the statue of Swami Vivekananda in Dar es Salaam.
A statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said that India and Tanzania have traditionally enjoyed close and friendly relations. Jaishankar’s visit to Tanzania will further strengthen the bilateral relations between our two countries.
