A Mumbai local train collided with the edge of a platform at Mumbra station in neighboring Thane district on its way to Tituala on Wednesday night, disrupting services and congesting trains for some time, officials said.
This unusual event happened when the train, which started its journey from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), was arriving at Mumbra station. They said no one was hurt in that.
Speaking to PTI, Central Railways Chief Public Relations Officer Dr. Shivraj Manaspur said the accident occurred when the slow train was reaching Platform No. 1 of the station at around 9.20pm.
“No passenger was reported injured,” Manaspur said, adding that the train driver immediately applied the brakes and stopped the train after he felt it hit the platform.
In its official statement about the accident, the Central Railway made it clear that it was not a derailment.
Manaspuri said that after the accident, the driver and other staff members thoroughly checked the local train before it left for Kalyan at 9.45pm.
“Then the train was canceled at Kalyan and sent to Calva in his car for a detailed inspection,” he said.
A few suburban locals were arrested behind this suburban train and also passed the site at a restricted speed as a precaution.
The incident led to the grouping of suburban services for some time and also disrupted suburban services.
Travelers complained that trains on slow lines were badly damaged by the accident and as a result crowds on trains and platforms swelled.
Some commuters tweeted that the accident resulted in delays from 45 minutes to one hour for other trains on the route.
