RIN News: The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in Mumbai and its suburbs on Thursday, with the possibility of very heavy rains in isolated places.

Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses were tied up around Sion in Mumbai in the morning amidst a downpour. The Indian Meteorological Department predicted heavy rains in the Malian capital and its environs today, Thursday, with the possibility of heavy rains in isolated places.

IMD issued an ‘orange’ alert for Mumbai, while a ‘red’ alert was issued for Raigad. An “orange” alert indicates the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in a few places, while a “red” alert indicates the possibility of very heavy rain.

Raigad district has recorded 70 percent of the average annual rainfall for the month of June at 459 mm, and at 708.4 mm, the district has recorded 22.5 percent of the average annual rainfall (3,148 mm) so far in July.

“The average rainfall in Raigad district for the month of June was 655 mm. This year, the district recorded 70 per cent average rainfall at 459 mm. In the first four days of July, 188 mm of rain was recorded.”

Amidst continuing inclement weather, a Mumbai local train collided with the edge of a platform at Mumbra station in neighboring Thane district on its way to Tituala on Wednesday night, disrupting services and congesting trains for some time.

Travelers complained that trains on slow lines were badly damaged by the accident and as a result crowds on trains and platforms swelled. Some commuters tweeted that the accident resulted in delays from 45 minutes to one hour for other trains on the route.

Karnataka: Officials said on Wednesday that two people were killed in two separate incidents in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts in all three districts of coastal Karnataka. The Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district administrations have declared July 5 a holiday for Anganwadis, primary schools, secondary schools and pre-university colleges.

Goa: With the IMD predicting heavy rains in Goa on Thursday, the state education ministry has announced a one-day holiday for schools. “In view of the continuous rains and the alert issued by the Goa Center of the Indian Meteorological Department and the expectation of heavy to very heavy rains and very heavy rains….the competent authority has decided to declare leave on 6th July 2023 from Std I to XII,” reads the circular issued by Director of Education, Shelish Sinai Zenged.

Delhi: Residents of the national capital woke up to a downpour Thursday.

Punjab: A man was killed and three people were injured after a factory shed collapsed on them after heavy rains near Dehlon area on Ludhiana Mallerkotla Road in Ludhiana on Wednesday. In Punjab, Ludhiana received 103mm of rain, Ferozepur 40.5mm, Gurdaspur 33.5, Patiala 21mm, Amritsar 17mm and Pathankot 9.2mm, according to the weather report.

Haryana: The report of the Meteorological Department stated that Hisar received 9 mm of rain in Haryana, Ambala 8 mm, Sirsa 2 mm and Karnal 1 mm. Chandigarh, the joint capital of the two countries, had an average rainfall of 20.3 mm.
