Candidates for assistant professorships at universities and colleges are no longer required to have a PhD in order to be eligible for an entry-level position, according to a new order from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The important point: Reversing its earlier decision, the UGC has announced that tests such as the National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET) and State Eligibility Test (SLET) will be the criteria required for appointment to the position of assistant professor at all universities and colleges.
the details: In a June 30 notice, UGC said, NET/SET/SLET should be the minimum criteria for direct employment into an assistant professor position for all institutions of higher education. UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadish Kumar explained, “Ph.D. Qualification for appointment as an optional assistant professor will be effective July 1, 2023.”

But but: A notice issued by the UGC noted that depending on the discipline, institutions can decide on shortlisting criteria higher than the minimum set by the UGC. Furthermore, a PhD degree is still mandatory for promotion to Associate Professor position.
