The Dalai Lama celebrated his 88th birthday on Thursday, as hundreds of his supporters and exiled Tibetans crowded his Indian hillside residence in Dharamsala.
Artists played traditional welcome melodies as the Tibetan spiritual leader arrived in his mobile open truck to preside over ceremonies in the courtyard of Tzoglakhang Temple, which was decorated with Tibetan and Buddhist flags and images.
The Dalai Lama said with a smile: “We are celebrating my 88th birthday, but look at me, I can barely look at 50.”
He has made the hillside town of Dharamsala his headquarters since fleeing Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. India regards Tibet as part of China, though it hosts Tibetan exiles.
The Dalai Lama denies being a separatist and says he only advocates greater autonomy and protection of the indigenous Buddhist culture in Tibet.
In April, the Dalai Lama faced widespread criticism after a video circulated on the Internet Show him kissing a little boy on his lips saying “suck my tongue”. The footage sparked a backlash online, with social media users condemning his behavior as inappropriate.
The Dalai Lama later apologized in a statement posted on his official website. She said he regretted the incident and wished to “apologize to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends around the world, for the hurt his words may have caused.”
