New Delhi: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denied the allegations.Khalistani His “Government” was sponsored after the painting “Celebrating” the Assassination of Indira Gandhi was recently shown in Ontario.
“India is wrong,” Trudeau said in his defense, following New Delhi’s harsh criticism of Canada for “making room for separatists, extremists and people who advocate violence.”
Said painting was part of a show in Brampton and showed the former Indian prime minister in a blood-stained white sari with turbaned men pointing guns at her. A poster read: “Revenge for the attack on Shri Darbar Sahib”. The banner referred to an incident in 1982 when security forces stormed the Golden Temple on the instructions of the former prime minister to kill Khalistani leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Indira Gandhi was shot dead by two of her bodyguards in 1984.
Responding to the painting incident, Minister of Foreign Affairs S.P. Jaishankar last month said the “horrible incident” highlighted a larger issue, which is the space in Canada for Khalistan groups, separatists, extremists and people who advocate violence. He also hinted that it may affect Indo-Canadian relations.
He also said he was “confused” by CNSA Judy Thomas’ comments that India was “among the most important sources of foreign interference in Canada”. “If anyone has a complaint, we have a complaint about Canada…”
