The shooting incident at the Tis Hazare courthouse was reported on Wednesday as police said two groups of lawyers were involved.

Three preachers were arrested in connection with the Tess Hazare court shooting here and sent into police custody for four days by a local court on Thursday.

It was alleged that an official of the Delhi Bar had opened fire on supporters of another member of the bar. A video clip of the incident that appeared on social media showed a person shooting in the air, while some people were seen throwing stones and wooden planks.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said that after a night-long search in Bhelswa, Swarup Nagar, Hyderpur, Shalimar Bagh and Vikaspuri, Defenders Aman Singh, Sachin Sangoan and Ravi Gupta were arrested.

According to the police officer, the three accused belong to rival groups of members of the Bar Association’s office. The PSD said that three country-made firearms, four live ammunition and two cars were seized.

Police said other defenders allegedly involved in the shooting have been identified and efforts are underway to arrest them.

While human rights defenders Sachin Sangwan, Aman Singh and Ravi Gupta were sent into police custody for four days, Capital Magistrate Shatinder Singh directed officials to ensure the accused were not subjected to torture.

During the trial, the investigating officer told the court that the police custody of the accused is required to recover the weapons used in the incident and to arrest the other accused.

Sanjay Sharma, Aman Singh’s lawyer, said his client was ready to cooperate with the investigation in any way. Ravi Gupta’s lawyer said no incriminating evidence was found against the accused.

Sachin Sanjuan’s lawyer said the accused’s imprisonment was not required as he had not been previously convicted and was a lawyer by profession.

Sabzi Mandi Police Station registered an FIR against the three accused and others under Section 147 of the Iraqi Penal Code (riots) 148 (riot, armed with a deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 307 (attempted murder), 34 (common intent) along with the provisions of the Weapons Act.
