Ocean Gatethe US-based company that managed the tourist submarine that exploded while diving into the wreck TitanicIts website on Thursday showed the suspension of all exploration and commercial operations.
The company did not go into detail beyond a red banner at the top of its website: “Oceangate has ceased all exploration and commercial operations.”
Its website shows that OceanGate has planned two expeditions to the century-old ruins of the Titanic, located in a remote corner of the North Atlantic, in June 2024.
US and Canadian authorities are investigating the cause of the undersea implosion in June, which killed all five people on board and raised questions about the disorderly nature of such expeditions.
Last week, the US Coast Guard recovered presumed human remains and wreckage from the submarine, known as Titan, after searching the ocean floor. Examination of the debris is expected to shed more light on the cause of the implosion.
Titan lost contact with its support ship during its descent on June 18. Her remains were found four days later, scattered on the sea floor about 1,600 feet (488 m) from the bow of the Titanic.
