In November 1984, just a day after the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated, three people were killed and a gurdwara was burned in the Pul Bangash district of Delhi.

A Delhi court will decide on July 19 whether to take note of the indictment filed against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in a case related to the alleged killing of Paul Bangash during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Additional Chief Justice of the Capital (ACMM) Vedi Gupta Anand has reserved the matter in 7 July after hearing arguments from the Central Prosecution Office of Investigation (CBI) as well as from the lawyer who represented the complainant.

The judge also ordered the court staff to check whether the case records, received from another court which was hearing the case earlier, were complete in all respects and to report by July 19, the next hearing date. The judge in Ross Avenue Court noted that the records filed by the Karkardoma Court staff were voluminous and contained in seven court files.

The judge also directed CBI to file a report from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) regarding forensic examination of Tytler’s voice samples. The CBI had on May 20 filed an indictment against Tytler in the case.

Three people were killed and a gurdwara was burnt in the Paul Bangash area of Delhi on November 1, 1984, one day after the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In the indictment filed before a special court here, the CBI said Tytler “incited, incited and provoked the masses gathered at the Pul Bangash Gurdwara Azad Market” on November 1, 1984, which led to the burning of the Gurdwara and the killing of three Sikhs – Thakur Singh, Badal Singh and Guru Charan Singh.

The agency invoked charges under Sections 147 (riots), 109 (incitement) read along with 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), among others, against Tytler, the CBI said.
