Openers Rehmanullah Gorbaz and Ibrahim Zadran reached centuries when Afghanistan beat Bangladesh by 142 runs in their second One Day International match and took the series on Saturday.
Gorbaz’s best 145 of 125 included 13 fours and eights, while Zadran hit 100 minutes and made 256 runs in the opening stand, Afghanistan’s highest partnership for any wicket.
After this stand, surpassing their previous best of 218 against Scotland in 2010, Afghanistan lost nine wickets for 75 before putting up 331-9, their highest total against Bangladesh and the third largest in their history.
Bangladesh, who lost a rain-affected first match by 17 runs, lost for 189 in their 43.2 overs with Ibadput Hossain unable to bat due to muscle strain.
The 142-run defeat was the biggest Bangladesh had lost by an innings to Afghanistan, and their third ODI series defeat at home since 2015. Mushfiqur Rahim, in his 250th match, led Bangladesh with 69.
Litton Das, who captained the team in the absence of Tamim Iqbal, decided to drop the ball first and this led to the dismay of the local crowd.
Gorbaz walked off the mark with a graceful cover from Mustafa Rahman in the opening.
The Bangladesh bowlers were erratic, giving 33 overs, falling far short against Gurbaz and failing to trouble Zadran.
After hitting eight fours and six sixes, Gorbaz racked up his fourth century off exactly 100 balls, tucking a charge from left-spinner Shakib Al Hasan towards Vickett’s mid for one out.
45 were all out off just 24 balls before Shakib got leg-by with a low shade delivery. Gurbaz checked unsuccessfully but his figure of 145 is Afghanistan’s second highest in ODIs.
Zadran reached his fourth century, courtesy of 118 balls, pushing Mustafizur into sweeping cap for his single.
Shakib, with a 2-50 record, was the only pitcher to concede fewer than 6 runs each time as they smothered the rest of the lineup after throwing out the slots.
Pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi, who took 3-24 in the first ODI, won 3-22 in this match.
He dismissed Captain Leighton Das (13) and Mohammed Naeem (9), who replaced Tamim Iqbal, to give Afghanistan an early advantage.
Bowler Mujibur Rahman cranked one sharply to edge out the resplendent hippocampus star at 25-3.
Shakib and Tawheed Hridoi fought back briefly but the introduction of spinner Rashid Khan hastened the collapse as Bangladesh lost three wickets for seven runs to be left at 72-6.
Mushfiq Rahim and Mahdi Hasan met in an 87-run stand before Mujib Hasan was dismissed for 25, ending with 3-40.
Farooqui broke the resistance of a stubborn Mushfaqur and Afghanistan took a 2-0 lead. The final ODI is on Tuesday.
