Irish amateur golfer Aine Donegan made a stellar impression on her debut at the US Women’s Open, playing a 3-under 69. However, her performance shines even more when one considers the troubles she had in preparing for the opening tee time.

Donegan arrived in San Francisco from Scotland, where she competed in the team tournament. Upon her arrival, she had to contend with one of the biggest problems for a golfer: her golf bag didn’t arrive on the plane.

Misplaced luggage, while not entirely inconvenient, is a relatively common occurrence, so Aine Donegan tried to go through with her plans as closely as possible. However, as the clubs did not arrive the next day, the problem became acute.

Donegan had to go into her first training session without her equipment, which meant she had to be familiarized with new clubs hours before the competition.

However, things can always go wrong, and they did. Donegan finally received her purse on Tuesday before the start of the US Women’s Open, only to discover her chauffeur was broken.

She told the LPGA Tour News Service:

ā€œThe clubs arrive the next day, I think on Tuesday, and my driver is wrecked, totally wrecked. At least that kept us from thinking, ā€˜Oh, what driver are we going to use.ā€™ We only had one choice.ā€

In other words, the LSU sophomore had to face the most important challenge of her career with a completely new driver for her.

However, the truth is Donegan could not have asked for a better debut, either at the US Women’s Open or on the LPGA Tour. Her first round of -3 was exceptional, placing her among the leaders (T3). True, she made four bogeys, but she impressively saved them with five birds and an eagle.

Day two also saw a strong showing from Aine Donegan. I played the front nine at +1, with three bogeys and two hares, and kept the overall score at -2. The first two holes of the back nine are played at par. So, when you’re on the 13th hole, you stay on T6, tied with three other players.

Donegan isn’t the only young amateur making waves at the US Women’s Open. American Amare Avery played the first round for -1, the same score she has achieved in the second round so far. An aggregate of -2 puts her in T6, alongside fellow Irishman.
