Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said the Khelo India and Fit India movements had brought about a “new revolution” in the country by providing a “new platform for young and talented players”.
The chief minister was speaking at a program held at Lok Bhavan here to distribute letters of appointment to 227 policemen selected by the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board under the ‘Skilled Player’ quota, says an official statement issued here.
Adityanath said the personnel management mandate has been amended to facilitate the police recruitment process keeping in mind the passion of young athletes.
The statement quoted Adityanath as saying that the Uttar Pradesh police had selected 479 players last year – the highest number yet to be recruited into the police force.
The statement said that Lalit Upadhyay, an Arjuna Award winner and part of the team that won the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was recently appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police.
It added that Vijay Yadav, who won the 2020 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, has been appointed as Tehsildar’s deputy.
Referring to the Khelo India and Fit India movements, Adityanath said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a healthy competition has started across the country, instilling more enthusiasm among the youth for sports and athletics.
He said work to build sports fields in every village panchayat is in full swing, adding that the revenue department is exchanging land for construction of sports fields near village schools to ensure that children do not have to play in the streets.
“Construction of mini sports stadiums at the block level is currently in the first phase. Moreover, a stadium is being built in every district,” said Adityanath.
He added that to enhance curiosity towards sports among the youth of the state, various programmes, including the formation of youth welfare committees and women’s welfare committees are being implemented in every panchayat village.
“Sports kits have so far been provided to 65,000 youth and women’s welfare committees across the state and various efforts are being made to enhance facilities for athletes,” said Adityanath.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that Uttar Pradesh is the first state in the country to honor Tokyo and Paralympic athletes with cash rewards.
