On Wednesday, the police arrested Pravesh Shukla who was accused of urinating on the victim, Dashmat Rawat, who belonged to a tribal caste.

A victim of a urination incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Siddhi district has urged the state government to release the accused involved in the act, saying the latter has realized his mistake.

On Wednesday, police arrested Pravesh Shukla on charges of urinating on the victim, Deshmat Rawat, of a tribal caste. A video clip of the incident circulated on social media platforms on Tuesday, after which the police registered a case against the accused and arrested him.

Besides facing related charges under the Islamic Penal Code and the (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, action has also been initiated under the strict National Security Act (NSA), against Shukla, who is currently imprisoned. An allegedly illegal part of Shukla’s house in Siddhi was also demolished.

“My claim to the government is that a mistake has been committed (by the accused) … Now Pravesh Shukla must be released. Whatever happened in the past, he is aware of his mistake,” Rawat told reporters on Friday when asked about the action against the accused.

When it was pointed out that he was making this demand despite the humiliating act of the accused, the victim said, “Yes, I agree… He is a Pandit from our village, we demand the government to release him.” Rawat also said that apart from building a road in the village, he has nothing to ask the government for.

The urination episode sparked a political controversy in Madhya Pradesh, where assembly elections are due by the end of the year, with Congress alleging that the accused had links with a local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker and the Saffron Party denying his connection with the BJP. him in any way.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan on Thursday washed the feet of the victim at CM’s home in Bhopal and also apologized to him for the insulting incident. But the opposition party called Chauhan’s move a mere drama.

The state government also imposed financial penalties of Rs 5 lakh on the victim and provided an additional sum of Rs 1.5 lakh for the construction of his house.

A Brahmin organization on Friday opposed the demolition of part of Shukla’s house, saying his act was unfortunate but that his family members could not be punished for his behaviour.
