ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has set up a high-level committee led by Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to decide whether Pakistan should send its national cricket team to participate in the Cricket World Cup in India, which is set to begin in October.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) that the Pakistan team’s participation in the prestigious event is contingent on government approval, given the strained relations between the two countries.
PCB wrote last week to Prime Minister Sharif, which is also the top sponsor of the Cricket Board, is seeking its guidance on whether the national team should travel to India. In response, the Prime Minister formed a 14-member committee tasked with making recommendations on the matter, which was made more complicated by India’s refusal to play the Asian Cup matches in Pakistan.
Based on the recommendations of the commission, the Prime Minister will make the final decision on the country’s participation in the World Cup. The committee includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, several other ministers, heads of security and intelligence services, and representatives of political parties in the coalition government.
