Legendary West Indies punter Brian Lara weighed in on the conversation that has dominated the debate over the past week – the bafflement of Jonny Bairstow.
The former West Indies captain said there was nothing wrong with the way Alex Carey dismissed Jonny Bairstow and shared a clip of him being bowled out the same way by England wicket-keeper Alec Stewart during an ODI match in 1997.
“There is no problem here in the spirit of the game!” Lara wrote on Instagram.
Well done Alec Stewart! (1997) Well done Alex Carey! (2023).
Both of your intentions were to execute a stump/run out the moment the ball was in your gloves.”
Lara also said that this is a foul of the strikes and the guards should not be blamed as it is strictly under the rules.
He said, “If the batter had been paying attention, he would have stayed in his fold.”
Lara gave an example of the famous “Hand of God” goal scored by Diego Maradona during the 1986 FIFA World Cup and reminded fans that it was not the first time that such incidents had occurred in sports.
“We’ve seen ‘Hand of God’ from #goat and many other accidents across all sports, so let’s move on to the next test,” he said.
Australia lead the Ashes series by 2-0 with the third Test at Leeds being restored even.
