According to Harrell’s manager Maurice Blanco, a pre-fight MRI of the fighter revealed Moyamoya’s condition. It is a rare neurological condition that, if left untreated, puts the patient at risk of having a stroke. Harrell’s condition is not said to end his career. He is expected to undergo surgery soon to treat the problem.

The sudden discovery of the disease ended Jack Della Maddelana’s welterweight bout against Josiah Harrell at UFC 290. Josiah Harrell successfully weighed in and was preparing for the bout before the MRI results came in. Harrell’s entire team is positive and hopes to see him back in action once he’s recovered according to his manager, Blanco.

Vince Murdock had similar health concerns to Josiah Harrell

Vince Murdock was diagnosed with moyamoya in 2019 which forced him out of the Octagon. Murdock was diagnosed with the disease after being tested at Stanford University. The MMA fighter was warned that if he ignored the condition, he would still be at risk of a stroke.

Murdock and Harrell also share another similarity in their diagnoses. Usually, moyamoya is diagnosed after a stroke. Both of these fighters came to know of such a disaster before.

Vince Murdock has recovered from illness after undergoing hours-long brain surgery, then also returned to compete in The ultimate fighter And Dana White Rivalry Series.

MMA reporter Nolan King highlights the similarity of diagnoses between UFC fighters by posting a tweet:

“While moyamoya is rare, Harrell isn’t the first UFC signer to discover it in a pre-fight test. Vince Murdock was diagnosed with it prior to a scheduled UFC bout in 2019.”
