Protesters at the British Grand Prix have asked Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton to sever ties with the team’s main sponsor Petronas and stand by them in their Just Stop Oil campaign.

Earlier in the weekend, the seven-time world champion urged protesters not to invade the track during the race because it would be a safety hazard. He also stated that he supported their cause.

In response to his positive words, Just Stop Oil protesters asked Lewis Hamilton to cancel his association with Malaysian oil company Petronas. The company has been the team’s primary sponsor since its return to the sport in 2010.

according to Racing News 365They said:

“We welcome Lewis Hamilton’s statement in support of peaceful protest, but we want to stress nonetheless that nonviolent direct action involves courageous individuals choosing to put their bodies on the line to demand a better future for all.”

They added: “We urge Mr Hamilton to relinquish Petronas as sponsor at the earliest opportunity and to demand an immediate termination of the new UK fossil fuel license – this will allow us to provide assurances that we will not disrupt certain events.” .

Lewis Hamilton chimes in at McLaren’s resurgence at Silverstone

The seven-time world champion said he was surprised by McLaren’s excellent performance in Saturday’s qualifying session, but also took a look at their “Red Bull-esque” design.

talk with Motorsport.comLewis Hamilton said:

“I’m not surprised. I mean, if you look at the car, it makes sense. I’m really happy for them. They’ve had such a bad run for so long, so to be back there is really cool. If you put it next to a Red Bull, it looks very similar down the sides.” It works. It’s great. We now have another team in the mix, which is what we want to see in this sport.”

“It’s not a hit. It’s just a wake-up call for us,” he added. Others have surpassed us, and we need to do more. Of course I will try to be optimistic and do my best. But realistically, I’m not sure. We will find. It was difficult to overtake the two Ferraris and then we got two McLarens. It will be a tough race.”

It will be great to see if Lewis Hamilton manages to make any progression in the main race and gets a shot at podium spots in front of his home crowd.
