In 1993, Arshad Warsi decided that he would not enter cinema because he did not see himself as a part of the world of cinema. Three years later, he was seated opposite veteran actor Jaya Bachchan, who was about to sign him for his on-screen debut, Tere Mere Sapne. Warsi made his acting debut with the superstar Amitabh Bachchan which he produced in 1996, after working as a choreographer for years.
In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Warsi opened up about his journey and said how he routinely designed for advertisements, before moving into films with 1993’s Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja. But an incident on the set made him vow that he would never be a part of films.
“Then I made a song in one movie and went through the funniest experience. I never said it publicly, but I had such an experience where I said, ‘I don’t get into cinema, I don’t want to be in this world, not where I am.’” the production worker asked me. In Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja about how long it would take to choreograph the song, it was complicated, it had a lot of people in. I’m not talking about Boney (Kapoor), he was very big so I wasn’t dealing with him, I was talking to the production people. I told them I would take four days to finish the song.
We set a price, it was Rs 1 lakh. He said please complete it quickly as the budget is limited so I said I will do my best. I worked hard with time and finished it in three days. He said that for four days! I am grateful to them, and because of that I became an actor, I would have been a choreographer.”
Then the actor told how he got his first movie. Warsi said that it was director Joy Augustine who came to his house one day and called him, asking him if he wanted to star in a film he was shooting for ABCL (Amitabh Bachchan’s production company). Joy tells Warsi that he has already spoken to them and just wanted him to send him his pictures.
“I said, ‘Dude I can’t act, don’t do this to me! “You meet people who come here to make a movie and they don’t make it, and everyone knows it! It’s like they’re out in the streets and people go,” the poor guy from his village came to be a hero, and he couldn’t. Now look at him traveling on a bus. I didn’t want to be that guy! “
Then the actor got pictures that a friend clicked on and sent to ABCL and “forgot about.” For him, Warsi said, it was just a “formality” and he thought little of it, until he received a call from Jaya Bachchan asking him to meet her at the office.
I thought she was going to fire me! I thought, ‘Hmm Jaya Bachchan, let’s fire her, why not, Amitabh Bachchan ki Biwi Hai! Inke muh se do-chaar gaaliya achchi lagegi, It will be the story of my life. So I went thinking I would be fired but she kept asking me do I speak Hindi and I kept answering yes I do, in English I was so nervous. Then she said, “You’re doing the movie.” I died! I said ab ring (Everything is over). “
Years later, Arshad Warsi asked Jaya Bachchan what convinced her to take him in her film and she told him that in the 36 pictures he sent, each had a different expression.
