Although the southwest monsoon started on June 25, about 10 days after its normal onset, the state recorded higher rainfall compared to the previous year. Two weeks after the onset of the southwest monsoon, Gujarat received an average of 40 percent of the rain with the Kutch region alone receiving 104 percent of the season’s share.
Gujarat recorded higher rainfall due to Cyclone Biparjoy followed by active monsoons. The state average last year as on this day was 27.69 percent, or 235.44 mm.
With 484 mm of rainfall on July 9, Kutch passed the average precipitation mark by 100 percent as it recorded 104.44 mm of precipitation, according to precipitation records at the state’s Emergency Operations Center (SEOC).
However, compared to July 29, 2022, Kutch recorded less than half – 51.84 percent or 237 mm of rain.
While on the one hand Kutch recorded more than 104 mm of rain, the central eastern region did not even get 30 percent of the average rainfall in the season. The district comprising the districts of Ahmedabad, Kheda, Anand, Chota Udaipur, Panchmahal, Mahisagar, Dahod, Anand and Vadodara received 27.66 percent (223.95 mm) of rain.
After Kutch, Saurashtra recorded 58.12 percent or 419.59 mm of precipitation. Among the five regions, South Gujarat recorded 30.88 percent and North Gujarat 39.64 percent.
Among the districts, other than Kutch, Junagadh has the highest rainfall with 77 per cent average rainfall in the season followed by Jamnagar (66.9 per cent).
On Sunday, most parts of the state received rainfall 218 talukas out of a total of 251 precipitation reported as of 4 p.m. The districts of Rajkot, Patan, Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Banaskantha, Surendranagar, Junagadh, Potad, Mehsana, Morbi, Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad also recorded heavy rains.
More rain to follow
Heavy to very heavy rains are expected to continue in most parts of Gujarat on July 10, said Manorama Mohanty, regional director of the Indian Meteorological Department in Ahmedabad. However, this will start to wane from July 11, she says.
“In the next 24 hours, rain is likely to hit most places in the entire state along with heavy to very heavy rains like Banaskantha, Patan, Surendranagar, Morbi, Kutch and some other areas,” Mohanty added. “For Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, it is expected to be light to moderate with chances of heavy rain on Monday,” she said.
“A warning has also been issued to fishermen as the sea will be stormy with strong winds for the next 24 hours,” said meteorological officials.
Due to the active monsoon conditions, severe weather is very likely to prevail along and off the north and south coast of Gujarat, and high waves in the range of 3.5 to 4.6 meters are expected until late Sunday night along the coast from Jahkau to Diu off the coast of Gujarat.
“Heavy to very heavy rains are very likely in Anand and Bharuch districts. Heavy rains in isolated places in districts of Patan, Sabarkantha, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Panchmal, Vadodara; in districts of Saurashtra, namely Surendrangar, Junagadh, Bhavnagar and Potad,” states the state’s weather forecast. For Monday, adding a light thunderstorm with lightning and surface winds of 30 to 40 km/h (gale) with light to moderate rain across the state.
Heavy rains are expected on Tuesday (11 July) in the districts of South Gujarat region, namely Bharuch, Surat, Navsari and Valsad, and in the Saurashtra districts of Amreli and Bhavnagar.
