Karnataka’s Congress government will on Monday start direct cash transfers in lieu of the Rice Guarantee Scheme – a key poll promise derailed after the Union government stopped selling rice and wheat to state governments in June.
The rice scheme, Anna Bhagya 2.0, guarantees five kilos of free rice per month for each BPL family member, plus five kilos of concentrate.
Karnataka has 1.28 crore ration card holders who will be eligible for cash transfer. The government will transfer 34 rupees per kilogram of rice, which is 170 rupees per month per person in exchange for rice.
