A 55-year-old man trapped under soil inside a well near Vizhingam in Thiruvananthapuram was not released for almost 24 hours, Sunday morning, although rescue efforts continued throughout the night, raising fears about his survival.
Fire and rescue services and police officials said efforts continued throughout the night to extract the man, a Tamil Nadu national, but so far were unsuccessful.
Police said soil fell on Maharajan, who has been staying in the area for several years, while he was repairing rings inside the well at Mokola near Vizhinjam.
Information about the incident was received at approximately 9:30 am on Saturday.
Visingham police, fire services crew and local residents are still engaged in removing earth from the well which is about 100 feet deep in an effort to dig it out.
