The Office of Vigilance alleged that OP Soni’s family’s expenses were more than their income from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2022.

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Sunday arrested former Deputy Chief Minister OP Soni in an alleged disproportionate assets case. The agency alleged that Sony accumulated assets disproportionately to its known sources of income during the period from 2016 to 2022.

A VB spokesperson said that a case has been registered under sections 13(1)(b) and 13(2) Prevention of Corruption Act at VB Police Station, Amritsar Ring v Soni after an investigation, which was ordered on 10 October 2022.

Giving away more details, the spokesperson said that from April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2022, the income of the former Deputy Prime Minister and his family was Rs 4,52,18,771 while the expenses were Rs 12,48,42,692, which It was Rs 7,96,23,921 or 176.08 per cent more than his known sources of income.

The office alleged that the former deputy prime minister had owned property in the name of his wife, Suman Soni, and his son, Raghav Soni.

Earlier on July 5, Congress leader Charanjeet Singh Chani appeared before the Mohali Vigilance Office in connection with a disproportionate assets case. The bureau is investigating allegations against Chaney of allegedly accumulating assets disproportionate to his known source of income.

Chaney had earlier been questioned by intelligence officers at the Vigilance Office twice, in June and April.

After being cross-examined, Chani criticized Chief Minister Bhagwant Man for launching “false propaganda” against him.

“False propaganda has been launched against me that I have properties worth Rs 169 crores. I want to ask the Chief Minister that you have made propaganda against me that I am rich and have huge assets of Rs 169 crores.

He said, “You have the oath of (vigilance) and you are in the government and I defy you to have details of real estate worth Rs 169 crore published in the papers.”

Chaney said he only owns two homes, two offices and a shop and gave details to the office.
