Besides issuing a red alert for Ladakh, the weatherman also predicted continued snow and rain until Sunday afternoon or evening.
Unseasonal snowfall and heavy rains have battered large parts of Ladakh, officials said, prompting the meteorological department to issue a red alert for the region.
They said the rains also caused landslides on the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar National Highway in Lamayuru, blocking the strategic highway.
Officials said the high passes in Leh and Kargil districts saw snow in the off-season at night after two days of rain.
Rangdom village in Kargil saw nearly three inches of snow fall, while other areas including Pensi La, Zanskar and the hills around Kargil were also covered in a snow blanket.
They added that traffic has been suspended on the Kargil-Zanskar road as a precautionary measure.
Officials said that after the landslide in Lamayeur, the main Les-Cargill highway was closed to traffic, and an operation was underway to remove debris to make traffic on the road worthwhile.
A weather expert forecast rain and snow to continue into Sunday afternoon or evening, along with issuing a “red alert” for the area for the next 24 hours.
“There have been moderate to heavy rains and snowfall in the upper reaches of Ladakh. People are advised to remain vigilant and avoid slip-prone areas,” a Met Department spokesperson said.
He did not rule out the possibility of sudden floods due to the high water level in rivers and streams.
However, the weatherman expected the weather to be mainly dry with scattered rain in places from July 10 to 14.
