Trade union minister Anurag Thakur on Saturday questioned the “silence” of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders over the “assassination of democracy” in West Bengal after violence marred the state’s panchayat elections.
“Announcing the panchayat elections in West Bengal is akin to the beginning of the assassination of democracy. Beating people, exploding bombs and setting fires has become commonplace,” said Thakur, a senior BJP leader.
“Democracy is being suppressed and killed in West Bengal. (Prime Minister) Mamata Banerjee and the leaders of the Trinamool Congress will stoop to any limit to win elections…be it assaulting people and unleashing atrocities on women,” the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting said.
Thakur questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s silence over the violence in West Bengal.
“Rahul Gandhi is silent because he wants to enter into an alliance with Mamata Banerjee. But she says she will not let them enter Bengal. Will Rahul Gandhi speak anything against the assassination of democracy in West Bengal?”
“Is Mallikarjun out or other opposition parties or those who talked about the return of the state awards going to speak up? Can’t they see democracy being killed in West Bengal.
