After weeks of rumors linking Alex DeBrincat to multiple teams across the league, the Ottawa Senators’ star winger will be traded to the Detroit Red Wings, reports Elliott Friedman.
Alex DeBrincat’s long-term future extension is currently undergoing a wrap. With the forward switching to UFA at the end of next season, Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings will be very eager to sign a four- to five-year contract, according to Friedman.
A trade package from either team has yet to be confirmed but with DeBrincat’s $9 million qualifying bid expiring, Ottawa will provide a significant salary cap for signing potential replacements.
Last week, Friedman reported that there appeared to be some tension between DeBrincat’s agent and the Ottawa Senators. However, both parties acknowledged that the agreement would be in the best interest of all. It was said that the negotiations were at a close distance and had already reached the final point.
Friedman discussed the situation on the “32 Ideas” podcast:
“Although the team and the agent aren’t very happy with each other right now, they need each other to get it done and from what I’ve heard it’s not too far, that’s within walking distance.”
However, three of the teams involved in the discussions have been known to have top-secret general managers: Lou Lamoriello of the New York Islanders, Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings, and Pat Verbeek, also with the Red Wings. Friedman said:
Three of the participating teams are 3 of the most secretive GMs in the NHL: Lou Lamoriello, Steve Yzerman, and Pat Verbeek.
But Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings have officially won the Alex DeBrincat trade.
