In the wake of the heavy rains, the Ropar district administration on Sunday issued a red alert and suspended all railway services until further orders.
The decision was taken because the area is one of the most flood prone areas in the state with the Satlog River flowing through the area and many other bodies of water including seasonal streams present in the area.
Deputy Commissioner Ropar Preeti Yadav presided over a meeting with various police and civil administration officials and instructed them to visit flood-prone areas with their teams. Officials from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) also attended the meeting and briefed the district administration on the water level of the Bhakra Dam.
Meanwhile, officials said the situation is under control and there is no need for panic. However, they called for close monitoring of the Satlog River and advised residents living in low-lying areas to remain alert.
The Deputy Commissioner advised people to call the 112 helpline in case of any emergency and urged them not to travel on the canal side roads. It also asked the public to inform the flood control room numbers of the helpline in case any rise in the water level is noticed in the waterways.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vivek Chil Soni said people should only go out of the house in case of urgent work.
The Deputy Commissioner also declared a holiday on Monday in all private and government schools and other educational institutions in the district.
Meanwhile, several reports from rural areas claim that water has entered the fields and destroyed the rice crop.
