Carlos Sainz is hoping to leapfrog the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at the 2023 British Grand Prix. The Spaniard will start the race in the P5, behind teammate Charles Leclerc.
“He had priority today to be in front of me, whereas last week he had priority.”
“They were all starting to overtake us, and I was in danger of being disqualified.”
“I told myself that either I’m going to shoot, or we’re going to be finished.”
🎙️ | Carlos Sainz on the tension with Charles: “He had priority today to be ahead of me, whereas last week I had priority.” “They were all starting to overtake us, and I was in danger of being disqualified.” “I told myself I would either shoot, or we’d both be shot.”
To get to the two McLarens ahead of him, Sainz will have to overtake his teammate Leclerc, who will start P4 at Silverstone. While the drivers usually have similar race pace, the Spaniard is likely to be very confident after winning last year’s race in Britain.
The former McLaren driver claimed it was a bit surprising to see the two Papayas in front of him. The Woking-based team have made massive upgrades to their MCL60 rival, seemingly giving them an edge over rival teams Ferrari and Mercedes.
However, their racing pace is currently still unknown, giving Ferrari a shot at another podium.
Speaking about his racing aspirations, Carlos Sainz told Sky Sports Formula 1:
“In terms of speed and the feel of the cars it wasn’t too bad. Just having two McLarens in front was unexpected. Our hopes are to try and repeat but knowing we are six or seven tenths slower than the Red Bull.”
Follow Carlos Sainz:
“We need to focus on trying to beat McLaren tomorrow, that will put us on the podium, and beat Mercedes who were much stronger than us in the pace of the race. It’s going to be an exciting race.”
Carlos Sainz has criticized Ferrari’s strategy in Austria
Sainz has slammed Ferrari’s questionable strategy in the 2023 Austrian F1 Grand Prix. The Spaniard claimed that the Scuderia team’s decision not to let him attack teammate Charles Leclerc at the start of the race made him look like an “idiot”.
Sainz appeared to be overtaking his teammate Charles Leclerc at the start of the race but was told by the team to back off. He then lost to Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton after the team doubled its drivers under VSC.
To make matters worse for the Spaniard, he lost his positions after the race due to track limits penalties. Carlos Sainz told Fox Sports Premium:
“I had a lot more speed than fourth… Being a team player during the first stint and then being in danger like that with the pit stop behind Charles really affected my race. You play in the team all the time and you have the pace but some decisions the team makes leave you like a fool.”
With Ferrari on McLaren’s heels at Silverstone, it will be exciting to watch Carlos Sainz race.
