With the New York Yankees still in fourth place in the American League East, the team fired hitting coach Dillon Lawson.

The move comes after the Yankees lost 7-4 to the home Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon. The defeat gave the Cubs a series victory in both teams’ final game before Tuesday’s All-Star game.

New York is 49-42 at the conceded halfway point of the 2023 season, eight games behind the Tampa Bay Rays, who snapped a seven-game winning streak with a win over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.

The New York Yankees have struggled since losing LTE quarterback Aaron Judge to a toe injury in June. The Yankees are ranked 28th in MLB with a . 231 batting average ahead of only the offensively challenging Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics.

Here’s how fans reacted to the shooting:

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made the announcement Sunday afternoon. He said:

“It is well documented that I have been reluctant in the past to make changes to our coaching staff mid-season. I am a firm believer that successes and failures are a team effort.

“However, I ultimately felt that a change was needed and that a new voice overseeing our batting operations would give us the best chance of performing closer to our abilities as we move forward into the second half of our season.”

Many New York Yankees fans are clear on who they see as the team’s new hitting coach: former Yankees right fielder and current New York baseball broadcaster Paul O’Neal.

O’Neal, 60, played nine of his 17 seasons with the Yankees, with four of his five All-Star appearances appearing on the stripes. A favorite of the Yankee Stadium “Bleacher Creatures,” O’Neal hit 0.28 in his career, but averaged 0.303 with New York from 1993-2001 after being traded to the Bronx from the Cincinnati Reds.

However, a Yankee fan would like to see third baseman Josh Donaldson as the third base coach. Anything to make a veteran retire forever.

It may not have been the firing Yankees fans called for — Boone and Cashman are quite in the crossfire for most New Yorkers — but Lawson’s firing is at least an attempt to turn the team’s fortunes around this season.

No replacement has been named for Lawson, who was named the team’s hitting coach prior to the 2022 campaign.
