A report submitted by the state government to the Supreme Court on Monday revealed that two months of violence left 142 people dead in Manipur, with the bulk of the casualties recorded in the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East and Churachandpur.

The mountainous region of Kangbokpi, which has also seen a fair share of violence in its surrounding areas, recorded eight deaths.

Other provinces where deaths were recorded are Tengnoupal (4), Thoubal (4), Kamjong (2) and Chandel (1).

The report also stated that 5,053 incidents of arson were reported as of July 3, with the majority of them in Kangpukpi (1,091), followed by Churachandpur (1,043). As many as 938 arson incidents have been reported in Imphal East and 528 in Bishnupur.

Meanwhile, the number of people staying in relief camps has risen – the report puts the number of displaced people at 54,488. In Churachandpur, 14,816 people are living in 102 relief camps while in Kangpukpi, 12,740 people are living in 60 camps.

A total of 5,995 informational tip-offs have been registered across the state, while 181 people have been arrested as of 5 p.m. on July 4. However, 108 were released on bail and two on security of personal confession.

With the approval of the Supreme Court on measures taken by the state government to maintain security, the report stated that bunkers, which were stated to be “a source of concern to the community both in the hills and in the valley”, are being dismantled by the security forces and security cover. Violence continued in the state until Monday, when one policeman was killed and 10 others were wounded in a shootout late Sunday night. An official stated that the shooting took place between two communities in Vaing and Singhda villages in Kangchop.
