Schools are closed across Delhi-NCR; At least 19 people have died in rain-related accidents; Landslides continued in the mountainous regions, while waterlogging was common on the plains. Watch how the rains affect life, and their spells continue across the country.

Heavy rains continued to wreak havoc in northern India, with 19 people killed in rain-related accidents, schools closed in Delhi-NCR and lengthy traffic hauls halting normal life.

In cities and towns, several roads and parts of buildings were flooded.

In 36 hours starting from 8:30 am on Saturday, Delhi witnessed an unprecedented 260mm of precipitation. That’s 30 percent more than the city average in July. This is also the highest rainfall for a single day since July 25, 1982.

Here’s Monsoon’s latest update today

  • All schools in Delhi and the neighboring cities of Gurugram and Noida were closed on Monday due to heavy rains in the region. In Ghaziabad, schools will remain closed for two more days.
  • Amidst this, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday took stock of the situation on the ground while speaking to the chief ministers of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, and the deputy governors of Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. Shah also provided the required central assistance in addressing the monsoon situation.
  • According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the amount of rain in the first eight days of July has bridged the deficit in precipitation in the entire country. Amid record rain, the Northern Railway canceled about 17 trains and diverted another 12.
  • Heavy rains continued in Punjab, with Chandigarh and Ambala reporting record rainfall of 322.2mm and 224.1mm respectively.
  • In Delhi, a 30-year-old woman died in Subzi Mandi and 5 others were injured in separate rain-related accidents.
  • Heavy rains also caused chaos in Himachal Pradesh, with IMD issuing a ‘red alert’ for seven districts. The monsoon is also fully active over Punjab and Haryana and “orange alerts” have been issued in the states.
  • In Himachal Pradesh, “heavy to very heavy” rains were seen sweeping away cars, flooding many areas and causing landslides.
  • At least six people have been killed in a rain-related accident and 20 major landslides and 17 flash floods have been reported in the past two days. In addition to 30 houses that were partially or completely damaged.
  • In Jammu and Kashmir, 2 soldiers are among the 5 people who were killed due to incessant rains and unseasonal snowfall in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir for the 3rd consecutive days.
