New York: It produced severe torrential rain Floods in New YorkA Hudson Valley that killed at least one person, flooded and closed roads Sunday night, as large parts of the Northeastern United States began bracing for possible rain.
As the storm moved east, the National Weather Service extended flash flood warnings to Connecticut, including the cities of Stamford and Greenwich, before creeping into Massachusetts. Forecasters said some areas could receive up to 5 inches (12 centimeters) of rain.
In New York’s Hudson Valley, rescue teams were trying to recover the body of a woman in her 30s who drowned after it was swept away while trying to evacuate her home. Two more people escaped.
The force of the floods displaced boulders, which slammed into the woman’s home and damaged part of its wall, Stephen Newhouse, the executive director of Orange County, told the Associated Press.
“Her house was completely surrounded by water,” he said.
He added, “She was trying to get through (the flood) with her dog, and she was swept away by the tidal waves.”
The extent of the devastation caused by the slow-moving storm, which lashed the area with up to 8 inches (20 cm) of rain, will not be known until after sunrise, when residents and officials can begin surveying the damage. But officials said the storm had already caused tens of millions of dollars in damage.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed to WCBS radio that several people were missing and a home was swept away.
Rain has hit some parts of New York harder than others, but officials said communities in the state’s east should prepare for heavy rains and potential flooding.
Officials urged residents in the storm line to stay off the roads.
“The amount of water is extraordinary and it’s still a very serious situation,” Hochul said.
“We’ll get through this,” she said, but added, “It’s going to be a rough night.”
The governor declared a state of emergency Sunday for Orange County, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) north of New York City. It later extended the state of emergency to the province of Ontario in western New York, southeast of Rochester.
“We are in close contact with local officials and state agencies are involved in the search and rescue effort,” she said.
The state deployed five fast water rescue teams and a high axle vehicle to assist with rescue operations in flooded areas.
Some videos posted on social media showed the extent of the flooding, with brown torrents flowing right next to homes, washing away roads in cascading, fast-moving streams.
West Point, home to the US Military Academy, was flooded. Officials are concerned that some historic buildings may suffer water damage.

The city’s emergency notification system tweeted that heavy rain could cause “life-threatening basement flooding” and instructed residents to “prepare now to move to higher ground if necessary.”
New York State Police said in a statement that State Route 9W was flooded, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway became so flooded that parts of it were closed. Police told the public to avoid the parkway.
