Congress alleged on Monday that the BJP-ruled state government, in its haste to launch a river cruise ahead of the G20 meeting, raised the level of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad, which in the aftermath of monsoon rains triggered floods in the vicinity. areas and endanger the life of the common man.

“When the river cruise opened on July 2, there was a request from Sabarmati Riverfront Development Company Limited (SRFDCL) to keep the water level at 134.5 feet at Vasna Barrage so that the cruise could be properly tested before the G20 meeting,” a Congressional Committee spokesperson claimed. Gujarat Pradesh State (GPCC) Manish Doshi quoting an official email from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) Monsoon Master Control Room to the State Government Irrigation Officer. SRFDCL is operated by AMC.

The Sabarmati River has a safe limit of about 128 feet when heavy rains are expected in monsoons.

Doshi claimed that AMC’s request to keep the water level at 134.5 feet was in favor of “special cruise operators,” despite the Meteorological Department’s forecast of heavy rain. “Instead of worrying about the 75 lakh citizens of Ahmedabad, the BJP-ruled government was concerned about the suitability of private cruise operators,” Doshi added.

However, SRFDCL President Keshav Varma disputed the claims as unfounded. These are all baseless conversations. There is no relationship with the water level in the river and floods. The water level is not as high as it is in much higher areas of the river. He told the Indian Express that there were other reasons such as wiretapping and illegal interception of the exchange.

AMC Commissioner M Thenarasan could not be reached for comment.
Claiming that the recent floods in various parts of the city were a result of the increase in the water level in the river, Doshi said, “An inch was flooded by rain last Friday, including CJ Road.” Rainfall areas like Panchkuwa, Kalupur, Shahpur, Relief Road, Gaikwad Haveli, Jamalpur, Vasna and other districts of central region.”

Criticizing the BJP-ruled AMC, the Congress stated that the crores of monsoon action plan have drained again as more than 200 large potholes have been developed on roads and more than 100 caves reported so far, thus “significantly harming” the identity of the city. heritage.
