Ezra Zia, the US Under Secretary of State for Civil Security, Democracy and Human Rights, met with Foreign Minister Vinay Mohan Quatra on Monday and discussed issues of bilateral importance, regional stability and civil security.

Zia, who is also the Special Coordinator on Tibet Issues, also met Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs.

“Grateful for the vibrant #USIndia partnership and joint efforts to advance a free and open Indo-Pacific, regional stability, and civil security,” Zia said in a Twitter post.

She said she also had a fruitful conversation with Verma.

“Thank you for your continued partnership in addressing global and regional challenges. Cooperation between the United States and India is essential to our highest priorities and to creating a more peaceful and prosperous world,” she added.

On Sunday, the US Undersecretary of State met with the Dalai Lama. The meeting drew a sharp reaction from China.

In a statement, the Chinese embassy said, “Xizang (Tibet) affairs are purely China’s internal affairs and no outside forces have the right to interfere. China firmly opposes any form of contact between foreign officials and ‘Tibetan independence’ forces.”
