Currently, tomatoes are selling for 140 rupees per kg in the retail market. The Chennai state government has launched the sale of tomatoes in 82 stores at a fair price of Rs 60 per kilo to offset the hike in tomato price on 4 July.
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday announced that the sale of tomatoes will be expanded to 300 fair price stores and is also planning to launch mobile vegetable outlets to stabilize the soaring vegetable prices.
Prime Minister MK Stalin presided over a meeting with Ministers KR Periyakaruppan (Cooperatives) and MRK Panneerselvam (Agriculture), Principal Secretary Shiv Das Meena, and senior government officials of the Secretariat here, instructing them to open mobile vegetable stores, wherever required, through a company The city and the Tamil Nadu Horticultural Development Agency have also successfully done so during the imposed Covid-19 lockdown.

Taking stock of the situation caused by price hikes, the Chief Minister requested the officials to continue selling vegetables through fresh vegetable outlets in the state and keep an eye on the prices of Urad Dal and Oor Dal.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister has instructed officials to ensure that vegetables are sold at prices below retail market prices in farmers’ shops, and to take appropriate action against hoarders.
