BEIJING: China has issued an unusual warning to its citizens traveling to the United States to beware of being “entrapped” by US law enforcement, in a fresh display of ongoing bilateral tensions despite a recent escalation in engagement.
Consular Affairs: Beijing’s Foreign Ministry said Monday in a security alert posted on the official Wechat account run by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
While Beijing has regularly reminded its citizens of gun and racial violence in the United States, it is rare to explicitly mention the risk of arbitrary arrest. China itself has often been accused of such arrests of its own people. It has also faced accusations of running police operations outside its territory to pursue Chinese individuals – something the government denies.
Monday’s warning follows a high-profile visit by the Treasury secretary to Beijing Janet YellenHe is the second member of the Biden administration’s cabinet to visit in recent weeks, after Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Yellen declared that relations between the world’s two largest economies were closer to a “more secure footing.”
One area where the US has called for more Chinese efforts is to curb the illegal synthetic drug trade, to help counter the fentanyl crisis. China’s statement on Monday indicated the differences in this regard.
The statement cited arbitrary US detentions and cross-border kidnappings of Chinese nationals, and described the actions as being based on the fentanyl cases.
Last month, the Justice Department announced two arrests and the unsealing of three indictments accusing China-based companies and their employees of fentanyl-related crimes.
‘malignant staining’
The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s statement also criticized the United States for “malicious smearing of China’s pursuit of fugitives.”
In April, the Justice Department charged 44 people living in China and elsewhere in Asia with harassing Chinese dissidents in the United States.
China has also called on its citizens in the United States to pay close attention to domestic security situations, citing repeated incidents of gun violence and discrimination against Asians.
