WWE Superstar Cody Rhodes has opened up about being a second-generation wrestler and wanting to make his own legacy.
American Nightmare is the son of the late Dusty Rhodes and brother of current AEW star Dustin Rhodes. He became the first member of his family to headline WrestleMania when he challenged Roman Reigns to a match at The Show of Shows for the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship. He failed to win the match but will strive to become champion one day.
During a recent interview with ESPN RadioCody Rhodes has stated that being the son of a successful father, he wants to take things a step further by doing more than they’ve already done.
“When it comes to second- or third-generation wrestlers, the honesty goes with any athlete, that your dad came before you and did something amazing. It’s something you don’t always say, ‘Yeah, I want to respect them.’” I want to honor my mom or my dad,” but also, you want to be better than they were, not in a negative way. You want to take it a step further. His type is such that he couldn’t really see him, but I feel like he’s still there with me,” Rhodes said. (H/T WrestlingNews.co)
Cody Rhodes followed up by saying that he wants to be better than Dusty and Dustin, but it’s going to be hard.
Rhodes added, “My way of honoring them is to try to be a better father and brother, and that’s definitely a struggle because they’ve set such an amazing path.”
Cody Rhodes has an ongoing feud with Brock Lesnar in WWE
American Nightmare returned to the wrestling juggernaut last year so he could do what his father never did, which was win the coveted WWE Championship. This year he won the Royal Rumble and challenged Roman Reigns for the Undisputed World Championship at The Show of Shows, but his dreams were dramatically halted when he lost.
Then Brock Lesnar attacked him on RAW after WrestleMania. Since then, the two men have wrestled twice, winning one match each. The Beast Incarnate returned to RAW last week but was forced to back out thanks to Cody Cutter. It looks like the two powerhouses will face each other again at SummerSlam in a rubber match.
However, Cody Rhodes did not give up on his goal. He still wants to win the title, and when his feud with Brock Lesnar ends, he can reignite his rivalry with Chief of the Clan.
If they ever encounter each other again, it will be interesting to see if Cody Rhodes emerges victorious in the end and becomes the new WWE Undisputed Universal Champion.
