Delhi Police data showed that Delhi has seen a rise in heinous crimes such as murder, rape and deception, and an alarming increase in theft by interstate gangs targeting cars, mobile phones and vehicles in the city, over the past six months.
Despite several incidents of kidnapping and armed robbery recently, street crime, according to the police, has decreased in the city – half of all unsolved kidnappings are registered to date, even less than a quarter of theft cases are solved.
However, the police noted that not only had the number of robbery cases decreased by a third, but 95% of them had been resolved, and kidnapping cases had decreased by 19% with more than 2,500 arrests.
Police also explained that the increase in the number of heinous crimes was “minimal” and that the rise in related statistics was due to “improved reporting” of cases due to the force’s “rapid and effective response” to such complaints.
Police have recorded at least a 20 to 40% increase in the number of thefts – including motor vehicle (MV) thefts – compared to last year with only 16 to 20% resulting in arrests.
The number of recorded rapes as of June 30 increased from 995 to 1,029 compared to the same period last year; More than 93% of those were caught. Delhi also saw a slight decrease in crimes against women – sexual harassment, molestation, stalking, assaulting women, etc. – from 4,201 to 3,920 with arrests in just over half.
Homicides rose slightly from 256 to 266, but burglaries fell by a third – from 1,161 to 779 with over 95% resolved resulting in over 1,500 arrests. Although only one fewer dacoity cases have been recorded this year than in 2022 – 7 instead of 8 – only 77% of cases have been resolved compared to 100% resolved last year.
Street crime has decreased, although these have made headlines more than once recently, police said; Kidnappings decreased from 4,687 in 2022 to 3,814 – a decrease of 19%.
The police said: “This decline indicates proactive measures taken by the Delhi Police to address kidnapping incidents and make immediate arrests.” A senior police command officer said, “There is a significant decrease in street crime; some increase in heinous crimes has been recorded as the police have been made aware to receive more complaints. The increase in thefts and burglaries is due to the fact that Delhi Police has opened its online portal urging citizens to submit complaints easier.
