A farmer near here had to pay with tomatoes for accidentally crashing his car into a car, as the affected people dumped his 2.5-tonne crop whose prices are going north with each passing day.
A gang of three allegedly kidnapped and escaped with farmer Mellish’s truck loaded with tomatoes, after realizing he had no money to pay them back for their broken mirror. Tomato prices are skyrocketing at a fixed Rs 100 per kg in most states.
Police state that a road accident in Chicagala, near here, saw the gang drive away with tomatoes after the farmer failed to pay cash after the accident that destroyed the trio’s car.
Police have registered a case following the incident, and efforts are underway to arrest the perpetrators.
Mallesh from Heryur city of Chitradurga district was transporting a load of tomatoes to Kolar on Saturday and the truck accidentally hit the mirror of the vehicle the accused were traveling in and smashed them.
Subsequently, they mistreated the farmer and his driver and demanded large compensation. Police said both of them did not have the money and tried to negotiate with the accused.
The three then allegedly forcefully controlled the truck and began driving it, demanding money. However, after the accused realized that the farmer and the driver had no money, the two accused pulled them out of the vehicle and sped off with the truck containing tomatoes totaling about 2.5 tons, worth Rs 2.5 to 3 lakh.
One of them reportedly drove the car they were originally traveling in.
The incident comes after a farmer from Belur in Hassan district complained last week that tomatoes worth more than 2.7 lakh rupees had been stolen.
