Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans can’t catch a break this season. After more than a month of off-field drama, the 23-year-old star is facing criticism for not wanting to develop his attacking game.

In the last episode of the programme on the ball podcast, Rick Bucher discussed rumors of Williamson not wanting to develop his offensive game. Bucher even cited Blake Griffin as an example of a player who added moves to his arsenal after his injuries began to multiply.

“Where are the floats, his over and under pull-ups, his pull-up jumps at the elbow?” Bowsher said. “Now from what I’ve been told, he showed no interest in developing any of those tricks. The tricks Blake Griffin learned along with a good three-point shot when the injuries started piling up on him, let him single-handedly drag the Detroit Pistons to a playoff berth.”

“It may not sound as impressive as what he did with the Clippers in his prime, but to me, what he did with Detroit was a true reflection of how he learned to play the game when he no longer enjoyed this exotic sport.” (h/t hoops)

Zion Williamson reportedly has no interest in developing a buoy and traversing tow, per @tweet “Where are the floats, his over and under pull-ups, his jumps up at the elbow? Now from what I’m told, he showed no interest in developing any of those tricks. Tricks… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Fans on social media began discussing Rick Bucher’s reporting on Zion Williamson. Some have championed Williamson, who was one of the game’s most efficient scorers ever. On the other hand, others have pointed to Zion’s problem with his weight and conditioning, which confirms rumors about his work ethic.

A fan agreed with Bucher that Williamson might want to adjust his playing style to prolong his career:

“If he wants to have a long career, he might be. He already has a hard time keeping his weight down, so anything that will help him take less stress on his joints will help.”

This fan noted Zion as an effective offensive player:

“It’s insane to criticize Zions’ ability to score goals given that they are one of the most efficient goalscorers ever.”

Another fan who was on Team Zion, noting that the Pelican star was already doing just that last season:

“Zion was literally doing that before he got injured last season. You’re all tweeting anything for the clicks now.”

@tweet @tweet Zion was literally doing it before he got injured last season. You all tweet anything to get clicks now.

Here are other reactions to rumors of Zion not wanting to develop their game:

@tweet @tweet Don’t blame Zion for following the pack. There are only two types of plays in the NBA today anyway: 1.) a line stop 2.) a three-point shot. Rinse and repeat. It will fit fine.

@tweet @tweet This is what happens when teams give players huge sums of money without them doing any work. Nobody is hungry

@tweet @tweet The NBA is undervaluing it now that Wimpey has carried the briefcase. A dejected Zion will allow the Pelicans to be sent to Sacramento, where they will be given a second and last chance before turning black.

Larry Nance Jr. denied the Rick Bucher report and defended Zion Williamson. Nance, who also plays for the New Orleans Pelicans, took to Twitter to call the rumor “pathetic” and reveal that Williamson is working on his game in the gym.

I don’t understand the constant trying to pull the Z name off.. I’ve been in the gym with this dude all season and he’s constantly working on touch, crossing and skill shots. These guys need to stop posting fake stories just for clicks. It’s pathetic twitter.com/thenbacentral/…

There is no doubt that Williamson can score basketball. His problem at the moment, as well as Moriah Mills, is that he just can’t stay healthy. He has only played 29 matches in the past two seasons. He’s always looked great when he’s healthy but he’s never been so healthy in his young career.
