Anniversary of the 2006 Mumbai train bombings: A series of seven bomb explosions rocked trains on the western line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway, killing about 200 people and injuring many more.
On this day in 2006: July 11, 2023 marks the 17th anniversary of the deadly Mumbai train bombings that brought the financial capital to a halt in 2006. The scars of the incident, also known as the 9/11 attacks, are still fresh in people’s minds. A series of seven bomb blasts rocked trains on the western line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway. The devastating explosions killed about 200 people and injured many more.
The seven explosions occurred in quick succession over the course of about 11 minutes. The explosives were reportedly placed in seven pressure cookers before being moved to different locations to carry out simultaneous explosions. According to investigations, the criminals used a mixture of RDX and ammonium nitrate in the explosions.

2006 Mumbai Train Bombings: The Incident
- The first bomb exploded around 6:20 pm, during peak traffic hours. The first explosion occurred inside the first class cabin of a Western Railway train on its way to Borivali. The device was detonated between Khar and Santa Cruz stations.
- At the same time, another blast occurred in a locality between Bandra and Khar Road.
- Five more blasts occurred in Jogeshwari, Mahim Junction, Mira Road-Bhayander, Matunga-Mahim Junction and Borivali as a result.
A memorial service for the victims was held in Mumbai a week after the blast. Sirens sounded across Mumbai to commemorate those who had died, and then President Abdul Kalam led the people in two minutes of silence.
2006 Mumbai Train Bombings: The Probe
- Between July and October 2006, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested 13 people in connection with the bombings.
- They were charged under the provisions of the Maharashtra Organized Crime Control Act (MCOCA).
- Twelve of the 13 suspects in the case were found guilty by the MCOCA Special Court in Mumbai, while one was acquitted of all charges.
- Five of the perpetrators were executed, while the remaining seven were sentenced to life imprisonment.
- Shahid Azmi, a lawyer who represented several suspects in the Mumbai blast case, was assassinated in his Mumbai office in 2010.
