Russian President Putin met Wagner’s leader Yevgeny Prigozhin days after a short-lived revolt before Mercenary leader The Kremlin spokesman said on Monday and his private army. The meeting, which lasted three hours, took place in the Kremlin on June 29th Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said leaders from the military company founded by Prigozhin were also involved.
Confirmation of a face-to-face meeting with Putin, who has called Prigozhin a traitor who was stabbed in the back, adds a new twist to the uncertainty surrounding the mercenary leader, whose fate and whereabouts have remained unknown since the failed rebellion.
Peskov said that during the June 29 meeting, Putin gave an “assessment” of Wagner’s actions on the battlefield in Ukraine and the “events of June 24”. The Kremlin spokesman said the president “also listened to the commanders’ explanations and offered them options for further employment and additional use in combat.” The leaders themselves put forward their version of what happened. They affirmed that they are among the firm supporters and soldiers of the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and also said that they are ready to continue fighting for their homeland. A total of 35 people took part in the meeting, Peskov said, including Wagner leaders and the company’s leadership, specifically Prigozhin himself.
On Monday, Russia’s Defense Ministry also released a video showing the country’s army chief – the first time General Valery Gerasimov had appeared since the revolt aimed at ousting him. During the insurrection, Prigozhin repeatedly denounced Gerasimov, who serves as chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu for failing to supply ammunition to his fighters in Ukraine. The updates appear to have been an attempt by Moscow to control the narrative after a turbulent period.
