A 17-year-old Class 10 student died by suicide on Monday in Dhanbad, Jharkhand state, after a teacher allegedly slapped her for wearing a ‘bandi’ to school. Police said they had registered a case and arrested a teacher and the principal of the school on Tuesday.
According to police, the girl, a student at St. Xavier’s School in Tutulmari, hanged herself from a ceiling fan and left a note in her uniform pocket. Her family members said that she was slapped by the teacher during morning prayers for “wearing a bindi” and that she was “upset” about it.
Ashish Yadav in charge of Tutulmari Police Station said, “In the warrant, the girl held the teacher responsible for the incident at the school. We have registered an FIR based on the family’s complaint against the teacher and the principal and have arrested both of them.”
Saint Xavier’s teachers could not be reached for comment.
