Speaking at a congratulatory ceremony organized by the Supreme Court Bar, the ICC noted that Justices Mishra and Viswanathan bring together a tradition of continuity and freshness of ideas.

CJI DY Chandrachud on Tuesday said the appointment of Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Senior Advocate Kalpathi Venkataraman Viswanathan as judges of the Supreme Court within 72 hours of the recommendation shows that the collegium is vibrant, active and committed to its mission.

Speaking at a congratulatory event organized by the Supreme Court Bar, he noted that Justices Mishra and Viswanathan bring together a tradition of continuity and freshness of ideas.

“I gratefully accept the recognition bestowed on me for the appointment of these two judges. But I will accept the Medal on behalf of all those who are part of a process that includes all my colleagues not only in the Collegium but beyond.”

“All the appointments we’ve made, we’ve consulted extensively with all the Supreme Court justices. We must also accept the fact that government is a stakeholder in the process and in these appointments that came less than 72 hours after names were recommended, we sent a message to the nation that the collegium is springing.” Lively, active and committed is his mission,” Chandrachod said.

Chief Justice of India said that Justice Mishra started his life with very humble origins and this shows that the justices who come to the Supreme Court are closely connected with the social reality of India.

“Justice Mishra is the first Supreme Court justice to be promoted from the Chhattisgarh High Court. He represents the aspirations of a relatively new country. He reflects the aspirations of the young generation of legal professionals who aspire to follow in his footsteps. His appointment should not be viewed solely in terms of professional success,” Chandrachod said. He rose to the position of judge of the highest court in the country.

Quoting a double syllable, the ICC welcomed Judge Mishra and said“Der lagi aane mein tumko shukr hai fir bhi aaye to, aas ne dil ka saath na chodhaa waise hum ghabraaye to.”

Talking about Justice Viswanathan, CJI said that he was an ideal mentor for the young members of the Bar.

“He has contributed to building a team of young lawyers… His image as a lawyer suggests that brashness and boasting are not hallmarks of success in the Bar Supreme. He is not very elegant and simple in his manner and yet he is very successful,” said Chandrachod.

Welcoming the elevation of Justice Viswanathan to the Supreme Court, the ICC said, “Tum aa gae ho to kuchh chandni si baaten hon, zamin pe chand kahan roz roz utarta hai.” Justice Mishra took the occasion to thank CJI Chandrachud for his appointment and said that he too is a product of the Bar.

“I can assure you that on the platform, I will not do anything that would degrade or discourage members of the Bar. I am a staunch advocate of the relationship between the Bar and the Council. Nothing can move in the judicial system without the active cooperation of the Bar “.

Justice Viswanathan also thanked the collegium presided over by Chief Justice Chandrachod for his appointment.

The event was attended by former High Court Justice Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra, Attorney General R Venkataramani, Advocate General Tushar Mehta, President of the Supreme Court Bar and Senior Advocate Adesh C Agarwala.

Justice Viswanathan will become Chief Justice of India upon the retirement of Justice J.P. Pardiwala on August 11, 2030, and will remain in office until May 25, 2031.

Justice Mishra was appointed as a Judge of Chhattisgarh High Court on 10th December 2009. He was appointed Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh on 13th October 2021.

He has served as a judge of the Supreme Court for more than 13 years and is ranked 21st in the seniority list of High Court judges in India.

Justice Viswanathan will become the 58th Chief Justice of India in August 2030 for a term of over nine months.

Born May 26, 1966, Justice Viswanathan will join an elite list of lawyers to reach the position of Chief Justice of India after his direct elevation to the bench of the Supreme Court from the Bar.
